Why should You get a pair of bass headphones?Today's music genres have amazing amounts of bass emphasis. Even country music has it's bass heavy songs, yet few headphones on the market emphasize bass and even fewer
do it well.
Having a pair of bass headphones is crucial for those who listen to a lot of electronic, pop, hip-hop music, and want to hear what the music producers intended you to hear and in some cases,
FEEL!
After several years of doing headphone reviews, I can't tell you how many people complain about how they bought a headphone that was highly rated only to be disappointed. It's extremely important to know what you are going to use the headphones for and buy a pair that is tailored to those uses. Many in the online audio world, and especially headphone audiophiles, highly covet their
neutral,
highly detailed, revealing headphones. While that is VERY satisfying, it's unrealistic for the majority of users because you are likely using poor source material (low bit rate mp3's), a portable player/phone (limited power supply because of size), and listen to more popular music that is today, more bass emphasized. Just a few of the common complaints to keep in mind on bass headphones... - bass is over emphasized...some bass headphones just do get too boomy
- other frequencies poorly produced... the mids can some times get muddled or lost to the bass and highs aren't usually as well extended
- flashy designs...some prefer this, but many bass emphasized headphones have unique
modern design templates
What characteristics should I look for to assure I get a good bass headphones? Could you elaborate a little? Absolutely! Controlled and correct kind of Bass Sure, bass headphones should be , well, bass emphasized...but it shouldn't come at the cost of everything else. In general, there are two common words reviewers use to describe bass... Tight, punchy bass is best for
electronic music headphones
while boomy bass is often preferred for hip-hop. Of course, the best headphones for bass
do both well,
especially with an amp involved. There are other
bass decriptive words
used as well, but they are more or less subsets of the words above. Many of the inexpensive headphone models that are bass emphasized are boomy and muddle the middle frequency range or because of their designs have poor reproduction of high frequencies. So, make sure when reading our reviews to look not only for whether it's a good headphone for bass, but also what kind of bass reproduction it is good at. Durability If you are spending good money on a product, you want to know they are going to last. The less expensive models are often all plastic and fake leather. As you move
up the price scale
you get thicker plastics, some metals, velour, thicker padding and padding in more locations, and additional features like warranties, extra tips, adapter, and carrying pouches. Obviously, the metal and thicker plastic products will hold up longer, but perhaps the most important durability feature is a warranty and purchasing from a retailer that doesn't void that warranty. One thing that is often overlooked is the cord. Thin cords are often the first to go, and on many headphones are not replaceable. Our reviews take this into account, and anything out of the norm for the price range is noted.

ComfortYou'd think this one was a sort of no-brainer, but you'd be wrong. I've seen many reviews of headphones from users who bought a pair based on high ratings and good reviews, with no mention of comfort. These buyers then review the headphones, saying how terrible they are because they’re uncomfortable. The sad truth is that if you fail to research the comfort of something like headphones, you are setting yourself---and the product---up to fail. In my opinion, uncomfortable headphones equal bad headphones. Why? Because regardless of how high quality the sound may be, if they are so painfully uncomfortable that I can’t stand to wear them…what benefit are they? I’ll point out that comfort, even more so than sound quality, is entirely subjective. What may be quite comfy to you may be excruciatingly uncomfortable to somebody else. So, look before you leap! Check the specs and measurements. Will they fit your head? Fit can be an issue, especially if you have an unusually large or small head. Adjustable headbands might help, but not always. Look for comments about how tightly they clasp your head and whether or not the headband has padding on it, as well as where. For in-ear designs, make sure they come with multiple tip choices. You may also want to know how far they go into your ear canal, or conversely, how far they
stick outside of the ear
for ergonomic reasons such as wearing a hat. Many manufacturers and reviewers list these features. If we see info about size and fit, we try to place it in our reviews. Style In bass headphones, flashy designs are the norm. But, for those that prefer something a
little more subtle,
there are models available in a variety of price ranges.
bass headphone with a more subtle design

Fancy colors, unique form factors and materials are marketing techniques used to draw the youthful buyers to the new models, luring them away from the older, traditional manufacturers. And heck, why not? If you’re paying big bucks for headphones, music and a portable player...why shouldn’t you
look great
while you‘re at it?

A word of caution: be careful here as sometimes lower quality headphones carry big price tags simply because a big brand name is associated with them, or because the design is (temporarily) the flavor of the month.Impedance/Sensitivity levels Simply put, impedance determines how much power the headphones will draw, while sensitivity indicates how much of the electrical signal delivered to the headphones is converted into sound. When using
portable devices
its important to get a headphone that's easy to drive. It's especially important for bass headphones as using a demanding headphone with a low power source device will drastically effect how they sound. Refer to our "amplifier needed" section on our headphone reviews for more info. Cost Efficient If you have eclectic musical tastes and like a little of everything, you should keep this in mind when you set a budget for your next pair of headphones. Although there are headphones available that are very well-rounded, I find it bo-ring to listen to the same headphones all the time, with all types of music. If you really like to feel the thud of bass with certain genres of music, I recommend buying two pairs of headphones: one as a pair of bass headphones, and the other for everything else.
